Dr Hawkins has published over a 120 peer reviewed papers, authored several book chapters and an atlas of sexually transmitted infections. He has organised, taught and examined fellow practitioners over a broad range of subjects associated with sexual health.
During four years with the Medical Research Council (MRC) his clinical research was primarily related to chlamydial infections and aspects of non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU), particularly non-chlamydial diseases. The latter are now known to include mycoplasma genitalium and ureaplasmas. His current interests also include pre and post exposure prophylaxis regimens (PREP and PEP) and adherence, HIV in pregnancy and genital dermatoses.
Over the last three decades he has been a member of various Department of Health Committees including the Expert Advisory Group on AIDS (EAGA). In 2015 he was elected Deputy Chair of the UK Advisory Panel on the management of HIV and Hepatitis B and C infected healthcare workers.
