Mr Ahmed R Ahmed completed his medical qualifications at the University College London and the Middlesex Hospital School of Medicine. He completed further training in surgery in London as well as Stanford University Medical Center and University of Rochester Medical Center, USA.

He trains other surgeons in the field of bariatric surgery and is on the faculty on numerous related courses. Mr Ahmed is a go-to consultant for his opinions on complex bariatric cases. He is also actively involved in research, with a PhD degree in mechanisms of complications of gastric bypass surgery at Imperial College London.

His principal areas of expertise are in the fields of keyhole and weight loss surgery, and he’s particularly interested in complex revisional bariatric surgeries. He receives referrals globally for his expert skills.

Mr. Ahmed’s bariatric surgery unit in London has been designated as an International Centre of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery. Mr Ahmed now sits on the prestigious International Bariatric Surgery Review Committee (IBSRC), comprised of top bariatric surgeons from around the world. He was recently elected, and now sits on, the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society council and was also elected to the council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Mr Ahmed has >99% success in achieving a complete laparoscopic result without converting to open surgery. He’s performed over 5,000 laparoscopic bariatric procedures, including over 2500 gastric bypasses. Mr Ahmed’s Imperial Weight Centre bariatric surgery unit in London has been designated as an International Centre of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery and Mr Ahmed now sits on the prestigious International Bariatric Surgery Review Committee (IBSRC), comprised of top bariatric surgeons from around the world who evaluate bariatric surgery units worldwide for ‘Centre of excellence’ status.

Mr Ahmed will always provide a friendly and honest opinion regarding suitability for surgery, putting safety and wellbeing as the first priority. Mr Ahmed is a clinical senior lecturer at Imperial College London and has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals. He is on the editorial boards of the main obesity scientific journals SOARD and Obesity Surgery. He is also a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), International Federation of Surgery for Obesity (IFSO), Society of American Gastroenterological and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS), British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS).
