Glucose tolerance test

London Medical provides the most up-to-date procedures for patients – with clinics held by some of the UK’s most renowned specialists.

Comprehensive clinical testing to help you lose weight and safeguard your health

The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test or OGTT can test how well your body can deal with the carbohydrates in your diet. The test is more accurate than simple finger prick testing and allows the weight management specialists at London Medical to identify diabetes, prediabetes and insulin resistance at an early stage.

Having tests can be worrying, but the expert staff at London Medical will be on hand to offer support and guidance throughout. By determining whether your body has difficulty metabolising the sugars in your diet, they can target a treatment programme to your individual needs and help you achieve the very best weight loss results.

What is a Glucose Tolerance Test?

An oral glucose tolerance test or OGTT is a test in which your blood glucose levels are measured before taking a sugary drink, and again at fixed intervals afterwards. The test can be used to diagnose diabetes and show if you have impaired glucose tolerance or prediabetes, which are both closely linked to obesity.

Glucose Tolerance Test at London Medical

The glucose tolerance test will take place in the comfort and discretion of London Medical’s outpatient clinic. It’s a straightforward, painless process but it lasts for 2 hours so you should allow an additional hour in total. The clinic’s supportive staff will be on hand to answer your questions or concerns, every step of the way.

What to expect during a Glucose Tolerance Test

  • You will usually be asked to stay off food and only take clear unsweetened drinks from midnight the night before the test.
  • The clinic staff will take a blood sample and measure your blood glucose level before you start the test, it’ll give an indication of your sugar levels when you’re fasting.
  • You’ll be asked to drink a sweet glucose drink.
  • A member of the team will check your blood after this sugar load, to see how your body has responded. Samples will then be taken at regular intervals to monitor the blood glucose level over time. The clinic staff will give you precise details of the schedule for your test, so that you know exactly what to expect.
