Low energy, fatigue and loss of libido: Managing the symptoms of the menopause

The menopause is the name given to the time when the menstrual cycles end, and can usually be diagnosed after a menstrual period has not occurred for a year. It is a natural biological process which tends to happen around the age of 50.

Physical symptoms of the menopause – which are typically experienced in the months leading up to it – include hot flashes, irregular periods, dryness in the vagina, chills, sleep problems, weight gain, night sweats, reduction in breast size, thinning hair and mood changes.

As you can see, there are many potential symptoms. But thankfully, there are lifestyle changes and treatments which allow women to manage them, and in this blog we highlight some of them.

Managing fatigue and low energy

Researchers have confirmed a link between the menopause and fatigue, which can be caused by the hormonal changes that are experienced during this time. There are several lifestyle changes which can help. If your tiredness is in part caused by a lack of sleep, exercising regularly can help you to enjoy a fuller night’s sleep when you hit the pillow. You should also aim to avoid caffeine from the afternoon onwards, as this could interrupt your sleep.

Ditch the coffee cup and pick up the glass or bottle – because drinking plenty of water is another way to ease the menopausal symptoms which can contribute to fatigue and low energy. You should also pay close attention to your diet, ensuring that it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fibres, fruits and calcium. This can help you to boost your bone health, and increase your sense of wellbeing.

Managing loss of libido

Aside from tiredness, a loss of libido is another common symptom which women can encounter as they go through menopause. What does a loss of libido mean? In simple terms, it means a loss of interest in sex, and this can be caused by a decrease in hormone levels during menopause, as well as other symptoms such as vaginal dryness, mood swings, weight gain, depression and hot flashes.

You can address loss of libido, but it is important that your first step is to describe your symptoms to a doctor. This means they will be able to prescribe you the right treatment. Treatments can include over the counter or prescription medications, hormone therapy, sex lubricant, and certain exercises designed to strengthen muscles which can enhance sensations during sex.
