When might you need to see an ophthalmologist

Most of us will never bump into an Ophthalmologist, that is, roughly 3% of the population who knowingly suffer from an Ophthalmologist disease.

With this in mind, it’s unlikely that the other 97% will come into contact, or even take the time to find out what the word means. Because let’s be honest, it’s not the most recognisable of terms.

Ophthalmology, if you’re not aware, is the branch of medicine that is concerned with diseases and disorders of the eye.

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor or an osteopathic doctor who is a specialist in eye and vision care. Trained to perform exams, diagnose, treat and prevent diseases as well as perform surgery to the eye. They may also undertake exams and prescribe glasses and contact lenses when necessary.

So, why might you book in a consultation with one of our Ophthalmologists?

  • Severe, sudden eye pain
  • Recurrent pain in or around the eye
  • Hazy, blurred, or double vision
  • Seeing flashes of light or sudden bright floating spots
  • Seeing rainbows or halos around lights
  • Seeing floating “spider webs”
  • Seeing a “curtain coming down” over one eye
  • Sensing a “cup filling up with ink” in one eye
  • Unusual, even painful, sensitivity to light or glare
  • Swollen, red eyes
  • Changes in the colour of the iris
  • White areas in the pupil of the eye
  • Sudden development of persistent floaters
  • Itching, burning, or a heavy discharge in the eyes
  • Any sudden change in vision
