About Professor Atul Gupta
Professor Atul Gupta is a Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and is Clinical Lead for the Children’s Respiratory Service at King’s College Hospital, London.
Professor Gupta trained in Paediatrics on the Yorkshire and Newcastle upon Tyne Paediatric training rotation. He was then awarded one of the few recognised UK Higher Specialist Training posts in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine in London. Professor Gupta has trained in Respiratory Paediatrics at some of the UK’s leading teaching hospitals, including Royal Brompton Hospital, Freeman Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Hospital. He holds dual accreditation and is on the specialist register for both General Paediatrics and Paediatric Respiratory Medicine. He was subsequently awarded a research degree (MDRes) in role of vitamin D in severe asthma, at Imperial College London.
Professor Gupta’s clinical and research interests are in children with complex/life-limiting respiratory disorders, which is a public health priority. Focused on novel treatments, investigating the mechanisms and identification of novel therapies, he works as a Research and Innovation Lead. His research has focused on the key areas for the NHS and has transformed clinical practice, by enabling patients who previously had limited safe and effective options. His research has contributed to the licensing of new asthma medications.
Professor Gupta has published more than 160 peer reviewed papers including papers in leading journals like Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). He has written chapters for Paediatric Respiratory books and has written reviews on all aspects of paediatric respiratory. He chairs south-east London Asthma Network.
Professor Gupta has also received the following awards: the Lorber Prize, awarded by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health; Asthma UK travel fellowship and British Lung Foundation travel fellowship; The James Fellowship, awarded by the British Medical Association; and the VASR Memorial Gold Medal and S.S Manchanda Research Gold Medal.
