Diagnostic tests for allergies
All consultations and diagnostics are carried out onsite at London Medical, which also has a dedicated pharmacy. We’ll review the results of your skin testing on the same day, so there’s no wait to receive your results or a treatment plan.
Occasionally you may require additional investigations, such as blood tests, breathing tests (spirometry), or nasal endoscopy. These can be organised on-site, often on the same day. The results from some tests, such as blood tests, will be discussed at a follow-up appointment as these take a few days to complete.
A skin prick allergy test is used to check your response to common allergens. It involves placing a series of different allergens onto the skin of your arm. Skin prick testing is a safe procedure and standardly performed in outpatient settings.
Your test will be carried out by a respiratory physiologist or a specialist allergy nurse. Firstly, your physiologist or nurse will sterilise your skin and draw a grid, so that there is a designated patch of skin for each allergen. They will then carefully place a drop of each allergen within the designated areas and puncture the skin.
After waiting 15 minutes, your physiologist or nurse will check to see if the skin has become itchy, red, or raised – this indicates an allergic response.
For patients with multiple food allergies, we will advise bringing additional samples of fresh or cooked food for testing, depending on history of symptoms and relevance to diagnosis.
A nasal endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the inside of your nose and sinuses.
This will be carried out in clinic by an ENT consultant. They will use a long, thin, flexible tube called an endoscope, which has a camera and light on the end. The endoscope is guided through one nostril so that the consultant can examine your nose and sinuses for abnormalities; this is repeated on both sides.
These procedures can be performed at the time of your appointment if the allergy or ENT consultant believes it will be helpful in supporting your diagnosis or monitoring your respiratory condition. Patients with undiagnosed or diagnosed asthma are usually the most suitable candidates for this procedure, but we can review patients with other lung pathology.
‘We treat allergy and ENT symptoms together by looking at every part of the airway – not just one area.’
