What are the benefits of digital hearing aids?
Digital hearing aids use complex signal processors that convert incoming sound into a digital signal. It’s like having a tiny computer in your ear – the digital signal is then processed using mathematical algorithms before being converted back into sound.
Digital hearing aids are programmable and special features can be customised to you. Hearing aid technology is continually improving, and even the more basic hearing aid models have sophisticated features to help improve your hearing.
Some of the benefits of modern digital hearing aids include:
- Feedback management – Reduces or eradicates feedback ‘whistling’
- Speech enhancement – Enhances speech in various situations, including background noise and crowded environments
- Noise reduction – Suppresses unwanted background noise, making it less noticeable and improving listening comfort
- Directional microphones – Enhances speech intelligibility under challenging environments by applying preference to sounds in front of the wearer while reducing the amplification of sound from behind
- Multiple programmes – Allows for unique settings for different listening situations
- Wind noise reduction – Reduces the noise created from wind blowing across the microphone
- Artificial Intelligence/ learning – Tracks and learns wearer preferences in various listening environments and automatically adapts based on the surrounding sound scene
- Bluetooth compatible – Establishes a wireless connection with smart devices via Bluetooth, allowing you to connect to mobile phones, MP3 players, televisions and computers
- Enhanced comfort and appearance – Ensures ease of insertion, maximum comfort and intuitive handling with ergonomic designs.
What are the different styles of hearing aids?
Hearing aids are available in a wide range of styles, which vary in price, size and where they sit in your ear. We can help you choose the right hearing aid based on your budget, personal preference and specific hearing needs.
We stock a wide variety of styles of hearing aids from the best brands on the market, including:
Behind The Ear (BTE) Open Fit – Open-fit devices are small, behind-the-ear hearing aids with a thin transparent tube that sits inside the ear. This type of aid is relatively discreet and keeps the ear open, resulting in a more natural and comfortable fit.
Invisible In the Canal (IIC) – This is the smallest type of hearing aid that sits right inside the ear canal. There are no external components which makes them invisible.
Completely In the Canal (CIC) – CIC hearing aids are slightly larger than IIC aids and sit just in the opening of the ear canal. Although slightly visible, they are still very discreet and easier to handle.
In The Ear (ITE) – ITE hearing aids occupy the whole helix portion of the outer ear. They are manually adjustable and may be used for a variety of hearing losses.
Wireless CROS/Bi-CROS systems – CROS/ Bi-CROS hearing instruments are for individuals with better hearing on one side. They transmit sounds/ speech approaching the poor ear to the good ear via a wireless microphone.

Your comprehensive hearing consultation enables us to fully understand your hearing needs and make recommendations best suited to your lifestyle. The consultation will include:
- Detailed medical history and background

- Hearing aid demonstration and selection
- Post-appointment clinical report
- Specialist referrals as needed.

2. Hearing aid selection and ordering
As part of your hearing aid consultation, we’ll take the time to answer any questions you might have about styles and models so you can choose the best device for your lifestyle. We will demonstrate suitable technology to your needs and provide independent and unbiased advice on what hearing aids would be right for you.
Once you have chosen the hearing aids, you can order them directly from our in-house pharmacy. It usually takes one week from the point of order to receive your brand-new hearing aid/s from the manufacturer. You will also be booked into a hearing aid fitting appointment.
3. Hearing aid fitting – 45 minutes: £200
At your hearing aid fitting appointment, we will help you with programming, fitting and fine-tuning your hearing aids. Your 45-minute consultation will include:
- In-situ hearing aid verification and validation measures to ensure your devices are providing you with clear, objective benefit
- Demonstration of how to use and take care of your hearing aids
- Initial auditory training session to help improve your speech discrimination with background noise and enable you to get the maximum benefit from your new hearing aids (with optional ongoing training)
- A follow-up and aftercare plan.
4. Hearing aid follow-up – 20 minutes: free
After your hearing aid fitting, we schedule a brief follow-up appointment for just a few weeks later. At this time, we’ll evaluate your progress, check whether you are having any problems with your hearing aids and make further fine-tuning adjustments as necessary. We may repeat some of the tests we performed at the initial consultation to identify additional areas of improvement and ensure that you are getting the maximum benefit from your hearing aids.
If your hearing aids have not been successful, we can try a different set for you. If you are not completely satisfied with your hearing aids after fine-tuning adjustments, you can return them to us for a full refund (provided the return is made within 30 days of the initial fitting). Rest assured that this is an infrequent outcome as our return rate is exceptionally low.
5. Ongoing aftercare – 20 minutes: £50
At London Medical, we consider aftercare to be for a lifetime – that means we’ll ensure that your hearing aids are optimised to meet your changing hearing needs for as long as you have them. Any fine-tuning adjustments you may want to make to your hearing aids will be offered to you for a small fee.
