    What is a CPET?

Also known as an exercise tolerance test, a CPET is used to see how efficiently your heart, lungs and muscles work when your body is under physical stress.

During the test, you’ll be asked to walk on a treadmill or cycle on a stationary bike. At the same time, we’ll closely monitor your heart rate, breathing, oxygen levels, blood pressure and other key readings.

This is different from standard check-ups carried out while you’re resting. A CPET helps identify how your body responds to movement and can uncover problems that may not be noticeable when you’re at rest.

What can a CPET test show?

A CPET is a specialised, non-invasive test that looks at how well your heart, lungs and muscles perform when you’re physically active. It can help explain symptoms like breathlessness and support a tailored treatment plan.

    A CPET may help identify:

    • the cause of unexplained shortness of breath
    • reduced exercise tolerance (your ability to keep going when exerting yourself)
    • the cause of excessive tiredness
    • early signs of heart or lung conditions
    • your readiness for major surgery, particularly if you have an existing health condition

It can also be used to track your response to treatment over time and to assess whether your condition is stable, improving or changing.

Why might I need a CPET?

You may be referred for a cardiopulmonary exercise test for several reasons, such as:

    • having increased breathlessness or tiredness, especially during physical activity
    • having symptoms that only occur when you exert yourself
    • you’re due to have surgery and need a medical fitness assessment beforehand
    • you’re living with a condition such as heart failure, pulmonary hypertension or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and more detailed testing is needed
    • you want to assess your current exercise capacity for health, training or recovery purposes

At London Medical, we also offer CPET if you’ve had an echocardiogram (ECG) or other cardiology tests, but we still need a clearer understanding of your symptoms or how well your current treatment is working.
