        About Professor Tufail

        Prof Adnan Tufail is a highly regarded consultant ophthalmologist in the medical retina service at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He is an expert in medical and inflammatory diseases of the retina and choroid. He has extensive experience treating common retinal conditions such as uveitis, as well as more complex issues such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, central serous retinopathy and myopic retinal degeneration.

        Professor Tufail trained at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, University of London. Following a two-year fellowship in medical retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital, he then pursued training at the Vanderbilt Medical Centre, Nashville, and a further two and half years undertaking clinical training in uveitis at the Jules Stein Eye Hospital, Los Angeles.

        He is currently Professor of Ophthalmology at University College London with extensive clinical and research experience. He is Clinical and Research Lead at Moorfields Eye Hospital for treatments for age-related macular degeneration. He also co-leads the £16 million Macustar Consortium, which unites industry and academia to drive dry AMD research, is the clinical lead of the largest-ever UK Medical Research Council grant to develop novel non-VEGF anti-angiogenic therapies.

        Professor Tufail’s main subspecialty is medical retina disorders – with current areas of research including novel therapies for dry AMD, choroidal neovascularisation, and diabetic retinopathy. Professor Tufail has published more than 80 peer-reviewed journal articles. But most notably, he was a co-principal investigator in the seminal ABC Trial examining bevacizumab for neovascular AMD. The ABC Trial became a cornerstone for anti-VEGF treatment protocols for wet-AMD therapy within the NHS.
